WHAT’S BLUE AND RUNS AROUND THE DIAMOND?

Softball New Brunswick started their Junior Development Program in 2018 with 14 umpires between the ages of 13-18.  

The objective of the program is to promote umpiring and recruit interested youth into the umpire program. As a member of the junior program, youth can receive their registration at a reduced rate and spend the summer being mentored by a senior umpire while working in the province’s minor softball programs. They start off with the middle school (grade 6-8) provincial tournament in June and end it with the U13 provincials in August. During that time they can work their age group or younger minor softball and house league games on the bases in their communities.  They also did several plates with a senior umpire working the bases. Youth umpires can stay as members of the junior development program until they graduate from high school. At any time after they turn 16 they can progress to a higher level, depending on their development, still working with a senior umpire. This is done so as not to discourage their development as an umpire by placing them in situations that they might not be able to handle. It is important that during their development that they have a MENTOR to help them in their progress and to provide guidance and advice. 

OBJECTIVES OF JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR SNB AND THE UMPIRES BRANCH:

AGE REQUIREMENTS
Anyone 18 years old and under and still in school is eligible to participate in the JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM with Softball New Brunswick and the Umpires Branch.

DEVELOPMENT
It is suggested that the umpires in the JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM work in the Minor Softball programs. Usually it would be best to work in levels where they are the same age or older than the players they are umpiring. This should be done under the supervision of an experienced umpire from their association.
At 16 years of age they could, depending on their development and if they would like to progress to a higher level, start umpiring at a higher level of ball always working with an experienced umpire. This is done so as not to discourage their development as an umpire by placing them in situation that they may not be able to handle. It is important that during their development that they have someone as a MENTOR to help them in their progress and to provide guidance and advice.
At no point can a coach approach a JD Umpire and question his or her call. They must go through the experienced umpire working that game. They will in turn asked the question in a way not to answer for the JD umpire but rather to see if they have any second thoughts about the situation that just occurred and may asked a question to the senior umpire about what just happened.

FEES
Up until the age of 18 the umpires can register with Softball Canada and Softball New Brunswick at a reduced rate. After 18 years of age they must register as a level I umpire.

Softball Nouveau-Brunswick a commencé son programme de développement junior en 2018 avec 14 arbitres âgés de 13 à 18 ans.

L'objectif du programme est de promouvoir l'arbitrage et de recruter des jeunes intéressés dans le programme d'arbitrage. En tant que membre du programme junior, les jeunes peuvent recevoir leur inscription à un tarif réduit et passer l'été à être encadrés par un arbitre senior tout en travaillant dans les programmes de softball mineur de la province. Ils commencent avec le tournoi provincial des écoles intermédiaires (6e à 8e année) en juin et le terminent avec les provinciaux U13 en août. Pendant ce temps, ils peuvent travailler leur groupe d'âge ou des matchs de softball mineur et de ligue maison plus jeunes sur les bases de leurs communautés. Ils ont également fait plusieurs plaques avec un arbitre senior travaillant sur les buts. Les jeunes arbitres peuvent rester en tant que membres du programme de développement junior jusqu'à ce qu'ils obtiennent leur diplôme d'études secondaires. À tout moment après avoir atteint l'âge de 16 ans, ils peuvent passer à un niveau supérieur, en fonction de leur développement, en travaillant toujours avec un arbitre senior. Ceci est fait pour ne pas décourager leur développement en tant qu'arbitre en les plaçant dans des situations qu'ils pourraient ne pas être en mesure de gérer. Il est important qu'au cours de leur développement, ils aient un MENTOR pour les aider dans leur progression et pour les guider et les conseiller.

CONDITIONS D'ÂGE

Toute personne âgée de 18 ans et moins et encore à l'école est éligible pour participer au PROGRAMME DE DÉVELOPPEMENT JUNIOR avec Softball Nouveau-Brunswick et la Branche des arbitres.

DÉVELOPPEMENT
Il est suggéré que les arbitres du PROGRAMME DE DÉVELOPPEMENT JUNIOR travaillent dans les programmes de softball mineur. Habituellement, il serait préférable de travailler dans des niveaux où ils ont le même âge ou plus que les joueurs qu'ils arbitrent. Cela devrait être fait sous la supervision d'un arbitre expérimenté de leur association.
À 16 ans, ils pourraient, selon leur développement et s'ils souhaitent évoluer vers un niveau supérieur, commencer à arbitrer à un niveau supérieur de balle en travaillant toujours avec un arbitre expérimenté. Ceci est fait pour ne pas décourager leur développement en tant qu'arbitre en les plaçant dans une situation qu'ils pourraient ne pas être en mesure de gérer. Il est important qu'au cours de leur développement, ils aient quelqu'un comme MENTOR pour les aider dans leur progression et pour les guider et les conseiller.
À aucun moment, un entraîneur ne peut approcher un arbitre JD et remettre en question sa décision. Ils doivent passer par l'arbitre expérimenté qui travaille ce match. Ils poseront à leur tour la question de manière à ne pas répondre pour l'arbitre JD mais plutôt pour voir s'ils ont des doutes sur la situation qui vient de se produire et peuvent poser une question à l'arbitre senior sur ce qui vient de se passer.

FRAIS
Jusqu'à l'âge de 18 ans, les arbitres peuvent s'inscrire auprès de Softball Canada et Softball Nouveau-Brunswick à un tarif réduit. Après 18 ans, ils doivent s'inscrire comme arbitre de niveau I.
